In the last blog post I mentioned how downtown San Diego was missing a bit of a variety when it comes to grocery stores. Residents of downtown San Diego condos have very limited options when it comes to grocery shopping within the downtown metro area.
Besides the Ralps on 1st and Market and the Albertsons in 15th and Market there is no other alternatives and these two supermarkets are only convenient to those living in the East Village and Marina Districts. Those living in Little Italy or the Waterfront have no grocery store in walking range. The good news is that this is coming to an end pretty soon.
Hanson’s Market, originally a natural foods store out of San Clemente, CA, is scheduled to open a 8,700 square foot store in Little Italy in the retail spaces underneath the newly built Ariel Suites (a 22 floor apartment rental community scheduled to open in October 2013). Hanson’s doesn’t carry anything with preservatives or coloring. Their produce is 95-percent organic and they source a good amount from small farms in SD. All their meats are grass-fed, something that sells out almost daily at their current location in San Clemente.
The store will consist of 6,200 sq ft of supermarket space with a 2,500 sq ft mezzanine dedicated to the Deli serving sandwiches and raw juices.
This is great new to residents of condos in Little Italy or condos in the Waterfront as there were previously not even one alternative to go grocery shopping within the neighborhood. Those living at Bayside, The Grande, Sapphire Tower and Breeza will be just blocks away from the grocery store.

It’s a great time to invest in downtown San Diego real estate as the metro area continues to positively develop and grow.
